Elbert Tannreuther presented Steve and Rhonda Posey with the Eleventh Annual Cornerstone Award on April 15, 2010, at the James Monroe Community Room. Established by the Monroe Area Community Foundation, the award recognizes "a person who displays an unselfish use of time or money--for no personal gain--for the betterment of the Monroe community."  Mr. and Mrs. Posey were selected by the foundation's Cornerstone Award Committee, who reviews all the nominations submitted from the citizens of Monroe.

John Singleton, executive director of the foundation, said the Poseys have been very active in supporting charities and nonprofit organizations in Monroe and elsewhere, but have done so without fanfare or recognition.  They've just been very quiet and don't bring attention to themselves.  We just thought it was time to honor them.

Without question, the Poseys created numerous jobs in Monroe by providing approximately 15 buildings for companies to settle here.  However, one of these buildings was used to offer "rent free" office space for the Monroe Area Community Foundation for over ten years.   Space has also been provided for Toys for Tots and PAWS.  The Monroe Historical Society, Monroe Police Department, and sporting events and teams are other recipients of their generosity.

When accepting the award, Steve Posey said his and Rhonda's association with Monroe and its leaders has been a positive direction for them.  A plaque was presented to them, along with a permanent plate with their names inscribed.  This plate will be applied to the large plaque hanging in the James Monroe Community Room at the Monroe City Building.   A dozen yellow roses were also presented to Mrs. Posey.
